On Saturday, June 10, poets, family and friends, gathered for the annual Haiku Ceremony hosted by the United Nations International School. Over 1,000 entries were submitted from across the globe, including the United States, Turkey, and Japan. Awards were given to the top three poems written in English, Spanish, French, Japanese, and a new special category inspired by the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations.
Ambassador Motohide Yoshikawa, the representative of the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations, praised all of the poets and remarked on the importance of haiku as a means to find much-needed solace and reflection in our busy world. Saturday's ceremony was a celebration of this beauty and contemplation.
For over 20 years, Studio students and teachers have annually been selected as finalists and/or winners. We are delighted to share that seven Studio poets have been recognized in 2023, with one student and one teacher winning second place prizes!
